A Day in

Annecy

The Picture Perfect Town on the Border of the French Alps

Back in May 2024, I embarked on a solo road trip across western Europe - and along the way, I stayed a night in the charming French lakeside city, Annecy. With stunning mountain views, and a huge lake, Annecy was the perfect retreat to spend a night.

"The Pearl of the French Alps"

...is the name by which the gorgeous lakeside city of Annecy is affectionately called. The city itself is nestled just between Lac d'Annecy (Lake Annecy) and the mountains, which gives this destination its unique charm.

Featuring a romantic medieval town, a waterfront casino and large park, Annecy makes for an ideal mountainous city break - with sights like the Palais de l'Isle, a 12th century castle that was used mainly as a prison until the French Revolution!

And where did I stay?

On my journey, I had arrived in Annecy after a very long drive - and headed straight to my hotel, Hotel Les Muses.

Situated on the north shore of the lake, it was the perfect base to explore the town, being only a short walk from the waterfront and a 20 minute walk into the old town.

After throwing my bags down in the rather cramped room, I embarked on a quest to find out what Annecy had to offer.

After hearing so much about the old town online, I strolled over immediately.

Just like the countless pictures you might have seen online, the antique buildings lay tall above the river below.

Nestled between them lay all sorts of alleyways and passages, each with its own plethora of cosy restaurants and hidden treasures.

The Main Attraction in Annecy is the Old town:

Full of historical charm!

So, Why Visit Annecy?

For me, the diverse mix of historical charm, the breathtaking mountainous scenery and the beauty of Lac d'Annecy all add together to form the ideal relaxed city break, without feeling too busy or crowded.

Annecy is the ideal place to escape for idyllic days relaxing on the shore of Lac d'Annecy, wandering the narrow alleyways of the old town, and discovering the stunning beauty of the mountains beyond.

I believe that Annecy is a place that should be on every travelers bucket list.
